Test Overview

The USMLE exam series is required to become a Licensed Doctor in the US. To gain Residency and ultimately Licensure in the US International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are required to gain ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) Certification. Once this has been obtained Graduates can apply for Residency with the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

The USMLE Step 1 is vital for gaining Residency – Program Coordinators use the USMLE Step 1 as a key indicator of potential applicant’s skills. Programs receive hundreds of applications every Match cycle and USMLE scores are used as a basis to award interviews. A Residency place is awarded by Program Coordinators based on successful interviews and competitive USMLE Step 1 Scores.

The USMLE Step 1 tests the mechanisms of health, disease and modes of therapy. The exam tests the basic science principles:

  • Biochemistry

Test Scores

USMLE Step 1 Test Scores

Passing Score – 185/75
This equates to answering 60-70% of all questions correctly. 185 is a minimum passing score, the average US Medical Graduates USMLE Step 1 score if 220-240.

You can only take your USMLE Step 1 again if you fail. If you pass and gain a low score you are unlikely to obtain a residency position and will not be able to repeat your exam to increase the score.

Remember Residency Program Coordinators use your USMLE Step 1 score to offer you an interview.

Register for the Test

You will need to go through a number of steps in order to apply for your USMLE Step 1 exam.
